U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft will play in HP Byron Nelson Championship

Denton’s Kelly Kraft, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion from SMU, has accepted a sponsor’s exemption to the HP Byron Nelson Championship May 17-20 at the TPC Four Seasons at Las Colinas.

Kraft follows a line of young local players who have showcased their skills at the Nelson, from Justin Leonard to Jordan Spieth. Spieth was a crowd favorite, entering the final round in contention the last two years. He tied for 16th at the 2010 Nelson and was 32nd last year.

Spieth cannot play a third straight Nelson because the Texas freshman will be playing for UT in the NCAA Regionals.

“We are committed to providing opportunities to young players who show the potential to someday be future stars, and we believe Kelly Kraft fits that mold,” said Robert Smith, tournament chairman for the 2012 HPBNC.

Kraft attended Denton Ryan High School and SMU, where he won four times.

“I grew up going to the Nelson, so to have the opportunity to now compete in it is something that is very special,” Kraft said.
